Shameless US S01E08

I know it's not that funny but here is Emmy Rossum's favourite gag courtesy of Esquire's 'Funny Jokes from Beautiful Women' section:

A guy goes to the doctor and the doctor tells him he has only a day to live. He goes home to tell his wife, who asks what he wants to do with his final hours. Of course he wants to spend them having sex. They have great sex all night long. Finally, at about 2:00 A.M., his wife says she's tired and wants to go to sleep.

He says, "Oh, come on, can't we just do it one more time?"

And she says, "Look, I've got to get up in the morning — you don't!"

Extras Strip For Big Payday

Wannabe movie stars with no acting skills can earn $1000 a day on the set of a raunchy American show starring Lucy Lawless - if they take their clothes off. Companies casting extras for sex-and-sandals epic Spartacus: Blood and Sand are struggling to find takers for the roles.

Insiders have revealed the daily pay packet for "bedroom scenes" starts at $750 and jumps to $1000 or more with a couple of basic lines to read. Women comfortable with baring their buttocks or breasts earn $500 a day without having to say anything. And amputees, required for gory battle scenes, get a minimum of $240. General extras get to hide beneath togas but are paid the lesser rate of $180 for a 10-hour shift. Perks include free buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The R18 show is set in the heyday of the Roman empire and follows a slave leading a violent revolt against his gluttonous rulers. It screens on pay TV in the United States. Movie star looks are not essential. Recruitment websites are calling for "amputees, character faces, weathered people and unique looking people" aged 18 to 99. Tall, muscular men are needed to play gladiators.

Kam Talent agent Kim Tian would not comment on pay rates but said the show's producers were desperate for anyone "Roman-looking" with European and African colouring. "We need a lot of people, they just need a good personality." She said the set was "very professional. There's lots of nudity, violence and blood but it's not sleazy."

Extras could count on between two and seven days' work a week between April and September. With a shortage of takers, strippers and prostitutes have been rung in, including Levi Holley, former weatherman for now-defunct Alt TV's Naked News. Auckland escort Carmen Thomas landed a role before her violent death last year.

Camelot S01E01 (preview)

Camelot showrunner Chris Chibnall has revealed that sex is a vital part of the new Starz drama. The writer - who has previously worked on Doctor Who and Torchwood - told Blastr that the new series would be an "adult" retelling of the Arthurian legend. "[Sex is] part of our palettes, and also we have some beautiful actors as well," he explained. "This is an adult drama."

He added: "The extraordinary thing in all the versions of Camelot and Arthurian legend is it's all about the romance. It's all about the passion. It's all about great ideals compromised by falling in love with the wrong person. So it's an element of our storytelling."

Series star Joseph Fiennes, who plays Merlin, agreed that the show is 'romantic'. "It's a beautiful, riveting, romantic, sensational epic story that has never been told in all of its episodes," said the actor.

Shameless US S01E07

When Fiona wakes up in his arms, it's clear Steve's been watching TV on mute the whole time. He kids her about how she was talking in her sleep - "You really opened up, thanked me for taking you away, kept on saying, You were right, Steve, you're the perfect guy for me, I don't know what I would do without you. And something about my penis being enormous and all-powerful." - and then the guy comes to remind them they have to be out by ten, so Steve takes Fiona down to the hotel pool and they fuck for like one million years.

Camelot for the Small Screen

In Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur," a young King Arthur presides over Camelot, a mythical place that attracted legions of knights and damsels. Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Amy Chozick states the pay-cable channel Starz hopes their TV version has the same appeal. On Feb. 25, Starz will preview the first episode of Camelot, an ambitious period drama full of feuding monarchies, black magic and hedonistic revelry. The series is part of the network's strategy to challenge HBO and Showtime with original programs.

Camelot marks the first new series from President and Chief Executive Chris Albrecht since he left HBO, where he shepherded such shows as Deadwood, Rome and Band of Brothers. His philosophy is that viewers will only shell out that additional $15 or so each month if pay cable provides shows that look and feel different than other TV offerings. By which he means, in this case, larger-than-life epics. "Quiet drama... "We're going to leave that to other people," Mr. Albrecht told reporters last month.

In January of last year, Starz debuted Spartacus: Blood and Sand, a stylized, CGI-heavy interpretation of ancient Rome with lots of shirtless men and video-game-like choreography. BBC co-production Torchwood, about a secret organization that investigates the supernatural, is due this summer.

Other shows in the works at Starz include Magic City, set in 1960s Miami, and Boss, a King Lear-inspired political drama set in Chicago starring Kelsey Grammer. Gus Van Sant will direct the first episode. The network is in discussions with Ben Silverman's Electus production company to develop shows about William the Conqueror and Marco Polo, says Mr. Silverman.

By the time Camelot officially kicks off the 10-episode season April 1, its competitors will be ready with epics of their own. Showtime, which first developed Camelot but passed on the series, premieres The Borgias starring Jeremy Irons on April 3. On April 17 HBO will kick off its medieval fantasy series Game of Thrones.

Shot in a studio outside Dublin, Camelot relies more on elaborate costumes, sweeping landscapes and an oversexed Morgan Le Fay (Eva Green) than on special effects. Producers say they didn't want to try to match the expensive battle scenes that viewers are accustomed to seeing in movies like Robin Hood and Gladiator. Modern TV screens may be big, but they're not that big.

"Those epic battle scenes of thousands of warriors moving together, that never pays off when you actually make it," says executive producer and president of production house GK-TV, Craig Cegielski. "We don't have the magic of a 40-foot screen."

The story begins with the death of King Uther Pendragon and the rise of a young King Arthur, played by Jamie Campbell Bower, recently seen in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Joseph Fiennes's Merlin helps him navigate the pitfalls of sudden royalty.

Shameless US S01E06

"I don't want to go before you..."
"I already had a couple..."

While the kids are downstairs playing, which for Carl means setting up an absurdly complex electric-chair system for his dolls - "They have to pay for their sins!" - Steve and Fiona are upstairs doing it, even though it's throwing off Fiona's schedule. There's some shameless fucking and boobs and positions and the whole time they're joking around about her dirty talk including how she prepares the kids' lunches, and when she finally has to tell him to come already she assures him she's already had a couple. Which is both sweet and efficient of her.

Women In Love

How do you know you're about to film a nude scene? Seven men want to hold your microphone!

Actress Olivia Grant reveals how she battled her nerves - and double-sided sticky tape - while filming a new TV version of D.H. Lawrence's Women In Love.

There's nothing like the phrase 'closed set' on a filming schedule to get an actor motivated.

I usually note it far in advance and immediately start planning an aggressive exercise regime.

Disrobing on-set is a breeze - so long as you can casually unveil a body entirely purged of the effects of occasionally abandoned self-control.

Unfortunately, the excellent on-set catering and the intensity of the filming have put paid to my hopes of a physical overhaul, and I'm almost relieved that in the wardrobe department we are grappling with a different dilemma entirely: should we use double-sided toupe tape or prosthetic glue to attach strings of pearls to my breasts in the heat and humidity of South Africa?

Despite us having plumped for tape, it keeps coming away. 'We could stick the pearls together so they form a kind of shield,' my dresser muses.

'But if you move around during the scene I don't think that's going to cut it.'

As subtle an art as acting is, it tends to involve a bit of moving around, and it's with some trepidation that I leave wardrobe - a silk negligee, a couple of layers of body make-up and some tenuously affixed pearls the only things between me and total immodesty.

I am in Cape Town to shoot a BBC4 adaptation of the D.H. Lawrence classic Women In Love.

The story charts the sexual awakening of sisters Gudrun and Ursula Brangwen, and their respective lovers, Gerald Crich and Rupert Birkin, set amid the newly industrialised reality of the early 20th Century.

I play Hermione Roddice, Birkin's embittered and deluded former mistress, and this nude scene is a flashback in which Hermione taunts Birkin for his inability to make love to her. Rory Kinnear plays Birkin.

We're both clad in dressing gowns and Ugg boots and pile in to a car to travel to the set.

I should be reassured by the fact that it is a closed set but in my experience this just means it suddenly takes seven men to hold up a sound boom.

Fortunately, our second assistant director seems to have the crew on a pretty short leash.

I notice only one rather spurious 'dry-ice wafter' making himself more conspicuous by his zealous smoke diffusing.

There are test shots and a long spell of experimenting with the lighting before the dressing gowns come off and the director yells: 'Action!' I am revealed in all my finery, pearls firmly in place.

And there they stay, for it's an emotional rather than a physical encounter between two lovers.

All the actors have at least one bedroom scene in this two-part drama adapted for television by William Ivory.

Something to be expected perhaps when one thinks that the 1969 Ken Russell film version (which gave Glenda Jackson a best actress Oscar) is still mostly remembered for Oliver Reed (Crich) and Alan Bates (Birkin) wrestling nude in front of a roaring fire.

My character is based on a friend of Lawrence - the eccentric and sexually omnivorous Lady Ottoline Morrell.

A society hostess and patron of the arts, she was known for cutting a swath through the Bloomsbury Set.

She didn't mess around - bedding Bertrand Russell, Augustus John and Aldous Huxley's wife.

Given that there were only two weeks between being offered the part last March and beginning filming alongside Rosamund Pike and Rachael Stirling (who play Gudrun and Ursula respectively), I still had some serious homework to do on the plane to Cape Town.

As I scanned for the chapters in the book that correspond with Ivory's adaptation, I was particularly gripped by a scene in which Hermione bashes Birkin over the head with a paperweight.

This is not only the tragic climax of her obsession with a man who no longer loves her, but the first scene to be shot.

Lawrence provides ample detail, describing Hermione as being consumed with 'delirious ecstasy' and the vicious assault on her ex-lover as an almost climactic release.

Still, it was a little difficult to imagine this as I removed my sleeping neighbour's packet of Mini-Cheddars from my elbow during the flight.

Lady Ottoline wasn't too thrilled with her literary portrayal either: she demanded the return of an opal she had given Lawrence as a gift and then refused to speak to either him or his wife for a decade.

This scene is being shot at the home of an Italian count at False Bay - a surfing hotspot dotted with multi-coloured beach huts.

It presents a challenge for our set designer given that Hermione's pile is meant to be in Nottingham and based on Garsington, Lady Ottoline's Oxfordshire retreat.

Upon arrival, I head for hair and make-up. Once suitably trussed, I put on a fabulous green silk gown I last saw in Angels, the London costumiers.

Standing on the sand outside my trailer, I wonder whether Ottoline, a notably eccentric dresser, would have approved of all this artifice.

Seeing as she was notorious for arriving at parties in theatrical costumes and swimming in high-heels at Garsington, I can't see why not.

A few surfers wander past, gazing quizzically at the strange figure I cut in my backless gown and a blue hairnet that is protecting my curls.

Routinely ridiculed by her peers, Lady Ottoline would have been no stranger to this kind of reaction.

Leonard Woolf described her cruelly as a sham beneath 'beautiful scarves' while Siegfried Sassoon routinely refused to sleep with her, deeply embarrassed by her insistence on wearing pink silk trousers.

The scene is intense and ferocious, and I manage to get through two of the prop department's paperweights in my enthusiastic bashing of Rory.

But my favourite scene turns out to be the re-creation of a Garsington garden party in Stellenbosch, one of the Cape's lush wine districts.

Stellenbosch looks like the English countryside on acid and the set dressers work minor miracles painstakingly weaving silk flowers into the African foliage.

The gardens are filled with linen deckchairs and I feel that we are as close as we can be to recreating a fragment of the past.

Admittedly I was contemplating this from one of the catering van's red plastic chairs while sipping tea from a polystyrene cup, but I had never felt so at home in Hermione's heels and tulle.

After two months it's a wrap and I reluctantly pack up my flat overlooking Table Mountain.

Back in London, I accept a piece of classical theatre and soon find myself exchanging the sexual liberation of Lawrence's Nottingham for the new constraints of corsets and crinolines in Philip Massinger's The Picture.

Less welcome is the move from South Africa's balmy autumn to England's rainy spring and more time spent in theatrical digs.

As Alec Guinness so correctly observed: 'Acting is happy agony.'

Women In Love will be shown next month on BBC4

Shameless US S01E05

Emmy Rossum has joked that she wears a "vag pad" when she is filming Shameless. Speaking to Life & Style, the actress explains that she figured out a way to protect her modesty when she is shooting nude scenes for the show.

"I have this thing that I've invented with wardrobe and makeup that I like to call the 'vag pad'," she said. "It's a strip of rubbery stuff that gets adhered to me."

However, her co-star Justin Chatwin joked that he is not as sophisticated, saying: "When we were shooting the pilot, I remember coming out wearing nothing but a sock on my pecker."

Marchlands S01E01

Alex Kingston has appeared nude in many roles, and reveals that she is fine with being naked on screen. "I don't have any qualms," she explains. "I'm used to taking my clothes off in front of strangers. I've done it since I was 14 with my mother's adult education art classes. She liked to paint and I went along as a life model."

For all this, she admits that when she first arrived in Los Angeles, she felt jumpy about her looks. She would go to awards ceremonies and feel like the 'butchest' woman there. Then, following the surprise US success of the Mike Hodges film, The Croupier, Toni Basil rang Kingston to congratulate her on how 'natural' she looked in her nude scenes, marvelling at the fact that she looked so natural in the film in contrast to the plastic bimbos of current American movies. "Your body was so normal, your breasts so real," Basil told her. "I haven't seen a real body on the screen for a decade."

"In England, there just isn't that fascism of beauty and physicality, or whatever," says Kingston. "You don't have to look like a gym bunny, all buffed up and a size two. You're not judged the way you are in the States. At first it really bothered me, but thankfully on ER people were allowed to pretty much look normal. There's no 'Body Perfect' look. You didn't have to be so self conscious: "My breasts are beginning to look a bit saggy", or whatever."

The flip response to Basil's enthusiasm was that Kingston seemed to take her clothes off an awful lot when she was not on ER - as though she had developed a peculiar niche as the woman to beat when the script calls for a thirtysomething actress to peel off her shirt. After the knocker-swaying of Moll Flanders and the more discreet cuddling up to Clive Owen in Croupier, she got naked again as a gangster's moll in Essex Boys, a Brit gangster flick inspired by the grisly Rettendon "Range Rover" murders.

But Kingston is not embarrassed by the trend. If anything, she is proud of the political message she believes she is sending about the objectification of women. "I don't have the build of a Californian girl. I don't have that mythical figure. It's not that I'm on the heavy side, this is just me. I'm happy with who I am and as long as the nudity is justified by the drama of the situation, I will go ahead with it," she explains. "It's wrong for women to be constantly shy and embarrassed about their bodies. There are so many images of unattainable beauty that are so destructive. It's important to show how your body really is. As the cliche has it, beauty comes from within."
