Shameless US S03E04

Sometimes chasing a dream is scary. Like when you graduate and realize you want to be an actress. So you pack up your things and you move to L.A. and you use all your training – how to do a voiceover, how to shoot a commercial, how to speak on camera – and you work, because that’s how dreams are made. You land your first movie role, then your first television project. Your friends see your face in their living rooms. For Kentucky-born Galadriel Stineman, dreams are becoming reality, as she recalls auditioning for roles in California. "If you’re the one person at the end who gets the role, you feel like you’ve won the lottery," she says. Stineman has starred in a movie for the Cartoon Network, as well as an indie film with Vivica A. Fox and two episodes of the HBO series True Blood. "I just had to believe in myself and hope that would be enough," Stineman says of her decision to go to Hollywood. "I knew this was the time."

Since she was a little girl growing up in river cities like Newport, Bellevue and Dayton, Stineman has been a performer. She directed pageants and other competitions with friends in her living room. She told teachers her name was Dorothy — as in The Wizard of Oz. And once she frightened her mother when out of the blue she announced, "I’m so tired. I can’t run any more." It was one of Dorothy’s lines in the movie. Even her name, Galadriel, sounded like something from a movie, taken from one of Tolkien’s elven queens in The Lord of the Rings, which her mother was reading when she was pregnant. It’s pronounced Guh-lay-dree-ool.

Stineman knew, even as a child, where she really wanted to be. "I’ll be living in California in a big house with lots of exotic animals," she would say. Yet she never became a child star like Union’s Josh Hutcherson, who made movies before he was 10, or Louisville’s Jennifer Lawrence, who was discovered at 14. Stineman participated in the drama club but never captured a starring role in a play at Newport Central Catholic High School. She had one line in Annie. She was a cheerleader, dancer and competitive horseback rider. Still, there was something within her. Something that would not be denied. "She has always had a flair for the dramatic," says Stineman’s mother, Peggy. "I saw her speak to an assembly in third grade, just a few lines, but I saw how she owned the stage."

And when she enrolled as a freshman at Northern Kentucky University, she found herself in front of the camera, taking electronic media classes in the College of Informatics. She excelled in school. An interview she conducted with local television anchor Sheree Paolello is used today as an example of great classwork. "Galadriel is a charming person — sunny, fun-loving and genuine," says her former communication studies professor Russell Proctor. "I can’t say that I knew she would be a Hollywood star — I never saw her act. But I knew she would be great at whatever she pursued."

Stineman has a face made for the camera. She is pretty, petite, with red curls and green eyes. She read Los Angeles Magazine throughout college, and she’d developed a relationship with representatives at the Northern Kentucky-based Katalyst Talent Agency. "I knew that she had a certain spark right away," says Kim Vance, assistant director for student life at NKU. "I expected her to do very well because she has wonderful communication skills and people skills."

Deep down, her mother knew what she was going to decide. "Galadriel has always been allowed to make her own decisions," says her mum. "But this topic was so foreign to me, I just had to offer love and support." Stineman thought about cost. It’s twice as expensive living in Los Angeles than Northern Kentucky. She thought about being lonely. She thought about whether or not she could survive. "It seemed like then or never," Stineman says. "I had no idea if the opportunity would come again." She moved to Burbank in the fall of 2007. Her connections with the Katalyst Agency got her an agent in California. "Those agents signed me on the spot," she says. "Having great representation right off the bat probably shaved years off starting my career." She was on the right track. The question was, would it all work out? It didn’t take very long to find out.

After settling in California, Stineman’s connections helped her land a starring role in a small budget indie film. "My first movie role was in [2010’s] 'Junkyard Dog' with Vivica A. Fox and Brad Dourif," Stineman said. "We had a couple rounds of auditions with the director and casting director." Stineman’s manager, Kurt Patino, took notice in her shortly after that role. Patino has been a manager for eight years and was a talent agent for six years before that. He said that his biggest discovery as an agent was America Ferrera. "Galadriel was introduced to me through an entertainment industry colleague, and as soon as I met her, I could tell she was very smart, very passionate about acting and very willing to follow the advice necessary to achieve success in Hollywood," Patino said.

Sharing time on screen with Vivica Fox, Stineman gained valuable experience that led to more opportunities. Another starring role followed in the television film adaptation of the popular children’s cartoon Ben 10: Alien Swarm. That made her a star — at least within a particular subset of fans. "When I booked my first role, I felt completely validated in my pursuit," she says. "I had always wondered if I could actually do this for a living and once I booked my first job, it was like, 'OK, someone other than me thinks I have a place on the screen.'"

Those appearances have led to others. Originally, Stineman says, she decided to try the acting life for nine months. Now, she’s been supporting herself for almost six years, appearing in television shows including The Middle and True Blood, and starring in movies including the teen comedy The Party is Over and a Hallmark television film called Operation Cupcake. "There are days when I think about some of the projects I’ve worked on and can’t believe it," she says. "Especially True Blood. I’m a huge fan of the show and I remember specific times when I said things like, 'I’d probably keel over and die if I ever got to be on that show.'"

The Hallmark movie got her a little more exposure, she thinks. "I play the 16-year-old daughter of Dean Cain (New Adventures of Superman) and Kristy Swanson (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.) In this movie, my dad is a career military man who is back with his family for the first time in a long while. He’s trying to fit in to their lives, while also deciding if he should accept a promotion or retire and spend more time with us. It’s a really touching movie and I’m proud to have beeen a part of it." Stineman’s character on The Middle is a tutor for Charlie McDermott’s character, Axl. "My comedy idol has been Patricia Heaton for a couple years now," Stineman said. "I started working on The Middle so I’m now working with her, which is very exciting." "When I see Galadriel in a show or movie, I always smile as I watch her become another character," mum Peggy says. "Sometimes I recognize some of the facial expressions as those I saw when she was a child."

Patino’s job is to motivate Stineman’s career through collaborating with her through choice of headshots, networking and teaching her about the industry in general. Stineman and Patino met early in his managerial career and, according to him, it has been one of his greatest and most rewarding business relationships. "I knew she had a natural talent, and the steel nerves needed to compete in an audition situation," Patino said. "She also is a very smart girl, and I knew she would explore ways to become a better and better actress as time went by and have the discipline to always work hard to achieve her goal of making it as a working actress."

As Patino introduces her to agents, casting directors, coaches, attorneys and publicists, Stineman has also met a few actors too. "I worked on Showtime’s Shameless a couple months ago and got to hang with William H. Macy one of the days. Picking his brain about theatre and life was an honor," Stineman said. "One thing the best actors I know all have in common: they don’t make excuses. Be accountable for your success and don’t be a victim. Excuses will not get you close to where you want to go. They’ll just keep you busy while someone else gets what you want."

That said, Stineman doesn’t feel like she’s made it. Not yet. But she loves what she’s doing. "I have no idea where I’ll be in a few years, because I have so many interests," she says. "I just like to make sure I’m doing the best I can at whatever I’m pursuing, and that it makes me happy. When it stops making me happy or makes me doubt who I am, I know it’s time to make changes. For now, (acting) makes me happy. I feel like I’ve got further to go, it pays the bills, and I have a great team. I’m not stopping anytime soon!"

Shameless US S03E01

Step into the Gallagher home on the Burbank, California, set of Showtime's Shameless, and one is immediately impressed by the attention to detail. The interior is vintage early 20th century Middle America. The off-white eggshell walls are dinged and dented. The moldings around the doors and windows are covered in glossy, light-green paint, with the brush strokes visible. In the bathroom stands a vintage 1920s porcelain pedestal sink complete with rust stains. And in the kitchen, the refrigerator is beaten up and the paint chipped. "It's very important that it all feels like a house, that it feels cozy, that it doesn't feel fake," Emmy Rossum, who plays eldest daughter and de facto mother figure Fiona Gallagher, tells Zap2it. "That's why when we were in our rehearsal process, we actually used the fridge as our fridge. We would make lunches for the kids out of there, and it was all kind of real feeling. Nothing is new. It's all aged and messed-up looking. Even the table is messed up, and it's got tape on it."

Season 3 of the hourlong comedy about the South Side Chicago family that manages to get by despite dysfunction, addiction, poverty and prosecution got under way Sunday, with several storylines continuing from last season. One concerns Fiona, who at season's end was settling into a domestic situation with on-and-off boyfriend Steve/Jimmy (Justin Chatwin) now that he's free of his marriage to Estefania (Stephanie Fantauzzi).

Sitting on the afghan-covered couch in the living room of the Gallagher house, Rossum explains, "He's kind of taken on the role of Mr. Mom, which is very strange for Fiona, and she's not sure how she feels about it because he's not the sexy, mysterious car thief that he was that she fell in love with. He's now Jimmy- - where'd Steve go? So it definitely takes a little getting used to, and they're having growing pains in their relationship, and obviously he hasn't always been the most trustworthy guy, and she has issues of trust, as it is, with men, and so I think we're seeing some of that. But they really love each other, so they're really trying to be happy and make it work. It's like a real relationship."

Over in his trailer on the Warner Bros. lot, William H. Macy reveals that his character, besotted family patriarch Frank Gallagher, will have his challenges this season, including getting thrown in jail for robbery, where health problems caused by decades of alcohol abuse begin to show themselves. "Withdrawal and sick," Macy says. "They gave me a list of what Frank has done to himself, but I guess years of alcohol abuse [have taken their toll]." Macy says he never imagined he'd have such fun playing the eloquent, opportunistic Frank, a character he says is unfortunately closer to him than I would like to admit. "It's been astoundingly funny -- and fun," he says. "I had no idea I would love doing a series as much as I have loved this. I love getting to revisit the character. I love Frank. It's my job to fall in love with him, of course, but I just find him so refreshing and so optimistic and hardworking, and I love his take on the world. I love -- it sounds odd to say, but I love his suicidal tendencies. I love his let's-burn-the-candle-at-both-ends attitude. I respect it; I really do. There's a good argument to be made for living your life that way."

Macy says that most weeks during the six months it takes to shoot a single 13-episode season, he'll work a four-day week. But Frank tends to speechify, and Macy notes that the heavy lifting often comes in when he has to memorize Frank's long-winded and comically eloquent diatribes. "On some days, I'll have a phone book to recite," he says, laughing. "I see him in the mode of the serious drinking Irish poets," Macy says. "Frank's a poet. No one knows it, but he'll tell you."

Outside the studio, Zach McGowan talks about how he brought his character, dimwitted sex addict Jody Silverman, to life. In Season 2, Jody was forced to find alternate living arrangements after getting the boot from wife Karen (Laura Wiggins), and that meant taking up with Karen's mom, Sheila (Joan Cusack). In Season 3, Jody and Sheila continue parenting the Down syndrome girl Karen gave birth to and rejected at the end of last season, while more of Jody's past comes to the surface. "He's like a dog, always wanting to make the people he's with happy," McGowan says of Jody's innocent nature. "He's super loyal. It's weird to say he's super loyal and he's married to Karen and is sleeping with her mother. But in the way that Jody sees it, Karen had kind of [rejected him]. "You know, if you're a dog and you send the dog out into the woods, then the dog finds a new owner, and that's kind of Jody. He's a very simple man, and he just wants normalcy, kind of, and he just wants to have a family and a life, but he's got this sexual addiction that kind of rears its head and makes it hard for people to deal with him. And so how I brought him to life was really trying to stick to the honesty of who he was ... . It's really a part that required me to have a lot of fun."

All the actors say this is a true ensemble that works well together and really does get along. Much of that seems to flow from Macy, who moves about the set, chats easily with cast and crew, and appears truly happy to be there. "Having worked on a lot of different shows myself," McGowan says, "it's very rare to have a male lead like him who is so on top of his job and his role as a coach/leader of this show, and he very much fills it. I kind of see him as the tribal elder of the set. He's always got words of wisdom, and he's always leading by example."

Shameless US S01E05

Emmy Rossum has joked that she wears a "vag pad" when she is filming Shameless. Speaking to Life & Style, the actress explains that she figured out a way to protect her modesty when she is shooting nude scenes for the show.

"I have this thing that I've invented with wardrobe and makeup that I like to call the 'vag pad'," she said. "It's a strip of rubbery stuff that gets adhered to me."

However, her co-star Justin Chatwin joked that he is not as sophisticated, saying: "When we were shooting the pilot, I remember coming out wearing nothing but a sock on my pecker."

Shameless US S01E02

Shanola Hampton stars alongside Emmy Rossum and William H. Macy in the edgy Showtime adaption of UK television series Shameless. She is poised to be Hollywood’s next “it” girl playing the very sexy Veronica, who runs her own x-rated home webcam. Her real life isn’t as scandalous as Veronica’s, so what did the gospel singing daughter of a pastor in South Carolina find the biggest challenge of her portrayal?

Shanola Hampton: Kev and I have some very intimate scenes together and because of our connection it makes it easier, but it’s always a challenge to reveal yourself in that way. You want to see the chemistry, but it’s not always the most comfortable of circumstances. You have a lot of people in the room even when they close the set. You still have a lot of people that are there and you’re in a relationship outside of your real relationship and then you have to play these characters on TV. So it’s always a challenge to do the more intimate scenes.

Was this the first time you had to do a scene like that?

Shanola Hampton: Absolutely. It was my very first and it wasn’t the last, lets just say. Kev and Veronica love each other very much for several episodes.

Shameless US S01E01

Emmy Rossum has revealed that she is not worried about the controversial side of Shameless. Rossum, who plays Fiona in the US remake of the show, told the New York Post that she has no problem with the sex scenes.

"People will either love this or be horribly offended, and I think all of those things are good challenges," she said. "I definitely embrace [the sex scenes]. So much of people's inner workings and who you really are can be shown through a sexual experience."

Rossum explained that she sees the sex scenes in the show as part of that, saying: "When they told me about the nudity and the sexuality, I've always been hesitant to do it in the past, but this is a classy group of people. Plus I knew that Bill Macy would also be showing his ass, so I wasn't worried!

"On a serious note, if you're going to show real people, you need to show their entire lives. Sex and romance are such a big part of an adult life, so to have it in any way that was more glamourised than the rest of the show would be odd. Apparently I didn't like wearing clothes until I was, like, seven, when I realised it was proper to wear clothes. I used to just take them off and run around naked. So clearly I'm comfortable that way."

Indeed, Rossum insists it is so important to show the sex lives of the characters in Shameless that negotiating herself out of the sex scenes and nudity in the show was "not an option".

"I had to fight for this role [of Fiona] because I don't think that given my past history of big budget movies and corset period dramas I was the logical choice for this kind of rough-around-the-edges character," she said. "I was living in the West Village at the time of my audition and it was raining and I remember thinking, 'I should take a cab'. Then I thought, 'No, screw it - Fiona wouldn't take a cab. I'm really going to do this thing'. So I went in jeans and a ripped tank top, no make-up and a Chicago accent. And I kind of convinced them that I could cuss with the best of them. My lack of vanity in the audition hopefully showed that it was very important to me to portray the character in a real way, as this raw person."
