When television viewers were introduced to Sookie Stackhouse, three years ago in real time but only a few weeks ago in the chronology of “True Blood,” she was a guileless Louisiana waitress with telepathic powers but without much knowledge of how the world worked, and – oh, right – she was a virgin.

How times have changed.

Over the first three seasons of “True Blood,” Sookie has grown into a take-charge heroine who can contend with shapeshifters, maenads, werewolves and – in Season 4 – witches, but no longer depends on her vampire paramour, Bill Compton, or his fanged rival, Eric Northman. During that time, Anna Paquin, the 28-year-old actress who plays Sookie, has evolved, too, into an increasingly central figure on this increasingly popular, explicit-in-all-kinds-of-ways HBO series, who has comfortably outgrown her former status as a precocious phenomenon (and is now married to co-star Stephen Moyer, who plays vampire Bill).


Ms. Paquin spoke recently for this Arts & Leisure article about her maturation on the show...

When I spoke to Alan Ball, he said he was surprised that you were interested in being in the “True Blood” pilot.

I think that was mutual, though. I was surprised that anyone wanted to cast me as blond and perky, and he asked me several times, “So, you seriously want to do a TV show for seven years?” I was like, “Yes.”

Sookie’s innocence is a big part of her character when we first meet her. Did you feel you were able to bring that to the role?

Well, Sookie was a hell of a lot more naive than I think I’d been in quite some time. A lot of times I end up being asked about, “Did XYZ experience in your childhood make you nervous. Were you worried? Were you scared?” Well, I didn’t know I was supposed to be. So no, I wasn’t. And that’s how Sookie is. She doesn’t quite know just how big what she’s getting herself into is. And so she proceeds with full force, Sookie energy. And I think that’s something that she and I have in common – completely different circumstances. If I’d known what I was getting myself into, would I have charged full-steam ahead? Who knows. I love where I am now.

Since this is an interview about “True Blood,” let’s get this over with: Did you have any concerns or second thoughts about the amount of nudity that the role calls for?

I’m not going to say that they wouldn’t have cast me if I wasn’t up for it. But it certainly would be a bit of a buzzkill if Sookie never took her clothes off, considering how often she has sex on the show. Considering the books were about the sexual awakening of a 25-year-old who has 25 years’ worth of pent-up frustration and then is supposed to have lots of hot vampire sex. And also, it was not something that I was uncomfortable with. And I’d done some pretty off-color stuff in various other jobs I’d done, and at much younger ages, with a lot less life experience.

But not to this extent!

Well, there’s a limit to how much you can show of a 15-year-old, but I played some pretty damaged, messed-up, promiscuous little street urchins, in film and on stage. All the wild fantasy vampire sex, at least it’s amongst consenting adults.

Have you seen the video for Snoop Dogg’s “Oh Sookie”?

There are certain moments where you’re like, “We must be doing our jobs well when, dot dot dot.” One of them was the Snoop Dogg video and one of them was the porn parody. We have officially entered the zeitgeist when there’s like tribute videos and pornography.

I have to ask: did you watch that?

No, but Steve and I did give it out as a crew gift last year. [laughs] And I can honestly say I have not watched it. I, at some point, probably out of curiosity will watch it. It’s not on my Top 10 list of things I need to do in my quite limited free time.

True Blood S04E06

During an interview with Accidental Sexiness the terrifically talented Janina Gavankar (Luna) talked about True Blood and her work as a musician and an actor. Gavankar, recently cast as shape-shifting high school teacher Luna did not think she would be an actor. In fact, she was concentrating on her musical career before she discovered acting.

We will definitely be learning more about True Blood’s shape-shifters since according to Gavankar, Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna find a shape-shifter support group. But will something develop between Luna and Sam, the shape-shifting owner of Merlotte’s? She adores working with Sam Trammell but Gavankar plays coy: “Luna and Sam like each other right now and that’s all I am going to say.”

Yes, she’s tight-lipped about the specifics of any relationship that might occur between her and Sam, but she also has this to say: “I have no problem with sex scenes that move the story lines along and show the true nature of humans, as opposed to sex scenes for sex scenes. I have no problem with nudity, I don’t think there’s any problem with the human body.”


That said, Gavankar still nearly passed up her role on True Blood because she didn’t feel like baring it all. “I was very aware of it, but I was like, ‘I’m not going to do it,’” she told Access Hollywood. “They were basically like, ‘It’s True Blood and there is nudity involved,’ when they sent me the material.”

“’Fine, I will only do it if it’s a strong recurring,’” she told her people. “They were like, ‘It’s a series regular.’ I was like, ‘Fine, I will only do it if’ — ‘cause I know everybody has sex – ‘I will only do it if she’s not a vampire, because vampire sex kind of freaks me out.’ They are like, ‘She’s a shapeshifter!’ I’m like, ‘Fine!’ My last thing was, ‘I will only do it, if I am not like a stripper,’ and they [said], ‘She’s a school teacher.’”

Yeah, Bon Temps’ schoolteachers probably pretty much have the lifestyle that strippers do elsewehere. But way to have boundaries, Janina.

Love Scenes Are Not Weird

Anna Paquin has revealed that she does not find it awkward to shoot love scenes opposite her real-life husband Stephen Moyer on True Blood. The actress, who plays the telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse on the HBO series, confessed that she feels comfortable when filming sex scenes with Moyer.

"Maybe it should be weird, simulating sex with your husband in front of people? But it's really not," Paquin told V Magazine. "When it's a love scene with someone you actually love, there's no feeling like, 'Can I touch him here? Can I touch him there?' You know what your boundaries are - or what they aren't, I suppose."


Paquin went on to say that she is not jealous of the attention that Moyer receives for his portrayal of the vampire Bill Compton. "There's probably something wrong with me, but I find it amusing to watch these men and women fawn all over [Moyer]," Paquin admitted. "It's not like anyone's really trying to do anything inappropriate. They just want him to hug them... or bite them."

Moyer revealed that his wife doesn't mind when he gets close with fans of the HBO series. The actor claimed in an interview with Men's Health that Paquin is not intimidated by True Blood's often aggressive female fanbase and even allows him to "bite boobs" on occasion. "I get to sign boobs a lot. I get to bite boobs, occasionally, when I'm allowed," Moyer explained. "If my missus is there and she approves of the person I get to bite boobs... and necks."

Moyer, who married Paquin in August 2010, also revealed that he felt an immediate attraction to her on their first meeting as he was "intrigued" by her demeanour. "I was intrigued by her. She was very open about work. But she was withdrawn [personally]," he said. "I was like, 'Here I am; here's everything I got.' I remember leaving the screen test and thinking, 'God, I'd like to spend more time with her.'"

True Blood S04E01

True Blood fans have another reason to be fangful thanks to a lesbian tryst in the new series reports The Sun. The vampire show's bosses have raised the stakes yet again bringing in the steamy scenes between Tara Thornton, played by Rutina Wesley, and Vedette Lim who guest stars as her girlfriend Naomi. The first episode of the fourth series — which just aired in the US — saw the lesbian lovers hook up after Tara fled the town of Bon Temps winding up working the cage-fighting circuit in New Orleans.

Actress Rutina admitted she was delighted to be able to sink her teeth into the Sapphic love plot which sees her indulge in several sex scenes with Vedette. The 32-year-old told Entertainment Weekly: "When I first got the script, I thought it was great. They've always given me stuff that challenged me as an actor and that was fun. I think Tara — if she is going to have a love interest this season — she's finally ready for it. She's had time to find herself and think a little bit. I think she's finally going to love herself in a way that is beautiful.

Nude Scenes Make Me Work Out

Anna Paquin has said that having to shoot nude scenes for True Blood helps motivate her to stay fit. The actress, whose character Sookie Stackhouse is well known for her tight T-shirts and hotpants, revealed that knowing that she will be filming in skimpy outfits ensures that she rarely misses a workout.

"If you're going to be spending literally every single day of your working life wearing clothes that barely cover your body, you're gonna be extra-diligent," Paquin admitted to Health magazine. "There's just a little extra motivation of, 'Hmmm, teeny white shorts and a bikini top? I think I will go to pilates this morning'."


While freely admitting to enjoying exercise, Paquin also said that she needs to learn to relax more. "I'm very hard on myself," she added. "Sometimes it's like, walk away from the elliptical machine. Go sit outside. Do something relaxing." Read more on this article...

Sex Scenes Hard

Alexander Skarsgård has admitted that his sex scenes with co-star Anna Paquin on True Blood were uncomfortable to film. The actor, who plays vampire sheriff Eric Northman on the HBO series, said that it was challenging for both of them to film last season's dream sex sequences because of their close friendship.

"It's clear to Steve [Moyer] and to everybody else what the deal is, which is that Anna is like a sister to me," Skarsgård told GQ when asked about their characters' budding romance. "Those love scenes take quite a bit of acting, actually," he explained. "A lot of acting."


Skarsgård's co-star Paquin married fellow True Blood star Moyer in August last year, while Skarsgård has long been rumoured to be dating his Straw Dogs co-star Kate Bosworth.

True Blood S02E09

ATW favourite Anna Paquin, the star of TV series True Blood, has revealed that she is bisexual. Paquin - who is engaged to her co-star Stephen Moyer - made the disclosure in a public service announcement video promoting the Give A Damn equal rights campaign. "I'm Anna Paquin. I'm bisexual and I give a damn," she said to camera during a private taping in Los Angeles. The revelation sparked such a flood of visitors to the giveadamn.org website that it crashed, leaving a message that read: "Ok - we didn't expect THIS kind of traffic!"

Paquin's contribution is included in the PSA alongside appearances from Sir Elton John, Clay Aiken, Whoopi Goldberg, Wanda Sykes and Sharon Osbourne. The campaign promotes the rights of gay, bisexual and transgendered people. Paquin explains in the video: "One hate crime is committed approximately every hour of every day in this country."

The 27-year-old actress announced her engagement to Moyer in August last year. They met on the set of True Blood, HBO's hit vampire drama, in which she plays waitress Sookie Stackhouse. She found fame as a child star in 1993 film The Piano, becoming the second youngest Oscar-winner in history when she was named best supporting actress aged 11. Paquin went on to appear in Fly Away Home and Amistad before getting her first blockbuster role as Rogue in the X-Men movies.

She relishes her role in True Blood, describing it as "a really full-on sexy show... lots of weird, kinky vampire sex". In a recent interview, Paquin said she and British-born Moyer have no plans. "I'm not really that girl, we're not really that couple," she said. "I wasn't the girl who spent hours dreaming of my wedding."

True Blood S02E02

For "True Blood" star Anna Paquin, filming the show's steamy fully nude bedroom scenes is a piece of cake, especially since she gets to share them with real-life boyfriend Stephen Moyer. "It's a sexy vampire show," Paquin told AOL Television, "and yes, there's more getting it on, so to speak."

As it turns out, Paquin is just about as brave as her HBO alter-ego Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic barmaid who stands up to vampires. "I feel fine," Paquin said of the nude scenes. "Although the way that people ask me about it all the time, I feel like maybe I should feel uptight about it. But I really don't."

She is thankful, though, to be so comfortable with her costar Moyer. "Obviously, if you're already with that person then you're not having to sort of get over the 'Wow, I'm naked with someone that I don't even know the middle name of!'" she said.

Lucky for Paquin, she's able to block out all the commotion that accompanies filming a TV show, and just focus on the scene at hand. "I think that regardless of what kind of scene you're doing, the better you know the person ... the more open and real your performance can be," she admitted. "And that goes for stunt scenes and heavy emotional scenes and sex scenes. OK, so I have a little bit of a leg up in that particular area with my on-screen [partner]."

True Blood S02E01

Anna Paquin has revealed that her character in HBO's "True Blood" will get more nude scenes in the second season. The actress who earned her first Golden Globe through the role, told E! Online "I get more naked this season than I did last season. We have a really great crew and everyone's really respectful. It's not an issue for me."

As a consequence, Paquin has to work out her exercise regime. "I work my ass off," she confessed. "I'm very careful about what I eat, and I work out a lot. My costume entails bathing suits, short-shorts and nude scenes, come on! I don't want to be perpetuating the myth that women actually do look exactly like the way they look in magazines and on television through absolutely no effort!"

But Paquin insisted that the season won't be mere sex and passion, but also "exciting and sexy and scary and engaging" that audience will be kept on the edge of the seat. "And every time you think things are going to go smoothly, something really effed up happens," she promised.

One thing that "True Blood" won't have though, is "Twilight" factor. Although both are about vampires, Paquin emphasized one difference between the series and the popular big screen flick. "They're completely different age groups that they're trying to appeal to," she explained. "It wouldn't be appropriate for teenagers to be watching our show. I wouldn't have been allowed to."

True Blood S01E07

Lizzy Caplan makes her spectacular True Blood entrance in this episode. She plays Amy, a sociopathic earth mother and vegan who’s addicted to vampire blood (“V”). A good bit of Amy’s storyline involves the enhanced sex made possible by V, so Caplan spends much of her on-camera time sans clothes. Here are her thoughts on vamp blood, the right way to kiss and showing her boobs on TV...

So how's it going on "True Blood"?
The best thing about it is that it's really really different from anything else that I've ever done, ever. Girls that speak in metaphors about the Earth and shit I'm equally as annoyed by them as anybody else, so it's especially weird to play that.

What's up with all the nudity?
I've never done nudity before so it is kind of traumatic to do it, but after the first time it was like 'Oh, this is not bad at all.' Then I realized, 'Oh, fuck, this is gonna be on television. And people are gonna see this. Jesus.' So it was a little scary but I think I'm kind of over it now. I'm glad I did it. "It was sort of a moment of invincibility like 'Oh, shit, I can pull this off. It's fine.'

Are you worried people are going to approach you and be like "Hi, I've seen your boobs?"
I really have never been cast in a role like this so I'm kind of unprepared for what it may yield. I guess the strange thing is my friend's fathers are watching this. That's gotta be weird. My father is adorable and he called me last night and was like, "Is this an episode that I can watch?" and I was like, 'No, Dad, you do not want to watch this.' He's super uncomfortable. We kind of tiptoe around the issue.

Is it strange to have weirdo creeps like us ogling you on the Internet?
It seems to be complimentary so I guess that's alright. I think if people were saying really nasty shit about me I would probably lock myself in the closet. I haven't really dug too deep into the message boards because I know I'll just find one comment that's mean and I'll cry.

Is it weird to shoot the sex scenes?
It's surprisingly fun, actually. You'd think you'd feel awkward because there's just a bunch of dudes standing around watching. But it's this weirdly liberating thing. It's preposterous that you show up and you're in a room full of people watching you simulate sex.

What makes a good makeout scene?
I always think it's totally bizarre when you're in your 20s or older and you haven't figured out how to kiss properly. I guess the basic no-no is you don't do the stabby tongue and you don't do the hard tongue. It's shocking when that happens. I want to be like are you kidding? Or are you for real?

What real drug do you think doing vamp blood is like?
I think that the most accurate thing would be like ecstasy with like mushrooms maybe. You definitely see a lot of crazy shit but very ecstasy-based.
