Where Do I Know Her From?

Natalie Zea is one of those actresses who elicits a Where do I know her from? thought bubble — not because she's forgettable, but because she's been on so many shows that it's hard to quite place her. She has a recurring role on FX's Justified (her character returns tonight), and she's starring in Fox's The Following as a woman caught between her serial-killer ex-husband (James Purefoy) and the former FBI agent (Kevin Bacon) who caught him. "It's really hard to wrap my brain around it," Zea laughed when Vulture sat down with her for lunch recently. "How could she not know her husband was a serial killer?" To give herself some perspective, she wrote a history for her character ("All this great dark shit about my absent mother") only to turn out to be wrong when showrunner Kevin Williamson presented her with a new script. "There was a line 'If my mother calls, tell her I'm napping,'" she laughed. "That's the problem when you're doing a show that incorporates flashbacks." Not to be daunted, Zea was happy to flash back on her varied career, giving us her favorite stories from some of her TV gigs...

D.C., 2000 & Franklin & Bash, 2011

Zea's first job in television was as a guest star on a short-lived series on the WB (appearing on the fourth and last-aired episode); she reunited with its star Mark-Paul Gosselaar eleven years later to guest on his then-new show on TNT. "We made out on D.C., and Mark-Paul did not remember me!" she laughs indignantly. "I felt really bad. And he felt really bad. I only shot one day on D.C., in Toronto, and Mark-Paul, Scott Paulin [the director], and I went out afterward to this barn where they serve beer and disgusting BBQ, and we stayed out all night until 5 a.m. until I had to get on a plane and go — so I don't know how he didn't remember. But I'm so terrible with names myself, and I've been in some embarrassing situations. I used to tend bar here in New York, and my regulars would come in, and I would have no idea. "You have to be kidding! You serve me here every night!" My friends call me the mind eraser. So I realized, Okay, I'll give him a second to remember. But I do feel bad for calling him out for it in front of someone else. Perhaps that was rude."


Passions, 2000-2002

Zea's first major television role was on the NBC daytime soap opera as one of the actresses playing socialite Gwen Hotchkiss Winthrop, love interest of Ethan Crane, played by her long-term boyfriend, Travis Schuldt. "The shenanigans that were going on behind the scenes would shock and amaze anyone who watched it — all the hookups, odd couplings, and the strange, strange matchups you never would have thought," she says. "I met Travis on Passions, and once I talked shit about him, something about how it felt uncomfortable to do intimate scenes with him because he's like my brother, and he found it, and quoted it back to me. It's now on our refrigerator. We worked together for two years, and getting together was a slow process, but after three years of friendship, it seemed really silly not to make out! And now we're basically married and we own a home. We've been together for about a decade, and we're in it to win it."

Hung, 2009

Zea went topless for the first time for her portrayal of a client who Ray wants to actually date for real — but she just wants to hurt him — in four episodes of the first season of the since-canceled HBO program. "You like to think you're fine with the nudity, very free with all that, but on the day, it doesn't matter how relaxed and groovy you are — it's still a mind-fuck," she admits. "I don't feel as weird about it as much now. This was early on, and the nudity waiver for me was like a dictionary. It was so thick and detailed. This one took two weeks to negotiate, and we have a couple on file now. For instance, I would never do a body double. The waiver is really detailed in terms of language: side breast, nipple, crack. I will not do crack. I don't love privacy patches, because they don't cover up cracks, so they made me a special one. I said, 'Make me a G-string without the string.' It's less about what's making it to air, and more about what they'll see on set. On Justified, I've done scenes completely topless, because I've been there long enough."

Californication, 2012-2013

Zea started her four-episode run as just another of Hank Moody's exes and then became one of the more significant ones by drugging him in the season five finale. "I had been dying to get on Californication for years," she reveals. "It's one of my favorite shows, and I'm friends with the casting director, Felicia Fasano, so every time I would see her, I'd say, 'Let's make this happen,' but there was always a conflict with whatever show I was working on at the time. I was shooting the Person of Interest pilot in New York, I got the Royal Pains offer for two days after that, and then I got a call from my manager about Californication. 'Felicia called. I told her you're shooting two things in New York at the moment ... ' This is on a Thursday, but I don't even have to look — of course I'll do it! This is the only show I've ever done that I've been a big fan of, and that will fuck with you. We do the scene, and then I went up to Tom Kapinos, the creator — and I never do this — but I begged for him to write more. 'Well, you know, you burned down his apartment.' 'Figure it out! I want to keep doing this!' Like he's my own personal Make-A-Wish Foundation. I guess I was empathetic enough, because they were like, 'All right, you're coming back!'"

Californication S06E04

"Once a bottom feeder, always a bottom feeder..."

Charlie wants Hank to work on a film about the underground gay S&M club scene in New York City, and this requires a lot of effort from everyone. Charlie pretends to be gay so he can cozy up to Robbie Mac and secure the writing gig–possibly by giving Robbie a blowjob. Meanwhile, Hank has to sleep with an agent he doesn’t really like (but that sounds like par for his course).

Should we pity Runkle? He was only trying to give people what they want, but he doesn’t want to give blowjobs – he wants to receive them – and so he ends up looking like a charlatan, a liar, and the world’s least desirable threesome partner. We have to have affection for the guy, if not because of who he is, then because he always manages to get into situations that give us ample nudity, dribbles Fleshbot. In this case, it is in the voluptuous form of Long Island native Alissa Dean. In the words of the actress, writer and producer extraordinaire herself, "My episode of Californication has lots of leather, lots of gay men, lots of sex… kind of the three best things ever!"

Sinful Sundays … And Beyond

January is a debaucherous month at Showtime. After all, it's when the network’s trio of serially addicted men — Frank (William H. Macy) on Shameless, Marty (Don Cheadle) on House of Lies, and Hank (David Duchovny) on Californication — all return to the pay-network to get back to the business of being bad. So it's quite fitting that Showtime labelled Jan. 13, the date that all three shows began their new seasons, "Sinful Sunday," notes Hollywood.com's Kelsea Stahler...

But while we’ve got a serial drinker in Frank, a career liar in Marty, and a compulsive fornicator in Hank, the characters are hardly just sinners. Fans of the three series would agree with President of Entertainment at Showtime, David Nevins, who notes Frank, Marty, and Hank are far more layered than your average bad boys. "We try to make sure that all of our characters have a real complexity to them, and that goes for both men and women," he says.

So while Macy, Cheadle, and Duchovny's roles are characters that could likely only exist on a network like Showtime, Sunday's well-rounded trio impossible to pigeonhole. "I think [Macy and Cheadle] are making full human beings," Duchovny says. "Across the board, [these characters are] human." That's likely what makes House of Lies the top performing comedy on Showtime, according to Nevins. It's also probably what brings fans of Hank Moody back season in and season out and keeps Shameless fans — a notoriously obsessive set — as rabid as ever for more Gallagher family hijinks. Of course, each of the series' leading men have their own ideas about what keeps the fans coming back for more.


As the patriarch of Shameless’ Gallagher family, Frank isn’t exactly the poster child for father of the year. The perpetually drunk (or, at the very least, tipsy) South Side Chicago native is a man only his family (and Macy... and Shameless fans everywhere) could love. Macy gets that, and it’s what makes his job so challenging. "This is my take on Frank," he says. "He’s smart, he’s funny, he’s got a wicked sense of humor. He sees the irony of life and so he holds things somewhat lightly, but he’s very hard-working, entrepreneurial, and dogged. He never gives up." Of course, that’s not exactly what most people would say about Frank, who ended last season asleep in the Chicago snow after punching his son Ian (Cameron Monaghan) over a case of Old Style beer. "I like the guy. [Laughs] But at the same time, he’s deplorable," says Macy. "If I do my job right [the audience] will have enough forgiveness in them and the next week they’ll tune in again."

So the audience may continue to come back for more, but what about the Gallaghers themselves? At the end of Season 2, they seemed to have had it with Frank. But all is not lost — Fiona (Emmy Rossum) and Co. may be a wild bunch, but when it comes down to it, they’re family. "I happen to know the family is not done with Frank, nor will they ever be done with Frank," Macy says. "As perplexing as it is, even to me, there’s a part of it I find very moving. We say blood is thicker than water and that family trumps all, but the Gallagher family is living proof of that." Heading into Season 3, Frank faces a few additional challenges beyond his own addictions. "At the end of this next season, he’s got some health issues … he bears his health problems stoically," Macy says. So it seems, even Frank can figure it out when the straights become dire. Macy’s not hoping Frank gets it allfigured out though. "I’ve got the role of a lifetime," he says. "At first [my scenes] are uncomfortable and icky, but if I just [bring] up [my] courage and throw [myself] into the scene as Frank would do, oh boy, I feel like the king of the world."

Sinful Sunday's youngest member is the sophomore series House of Lies, produced by and starring Cheadle as Marty Kaan, a leader in the ruthless, opportunistic world of management consulting. Together with the rest of his pod — or team of consultants — he swindles his way into deals with major corporations, but such a ruthless existence has its consequences outside of the office. But those consequences have led to success for the network and Nevins, who boasts House of Lies as the 'strongest comedy on our schedule, ratings-wise.' "It just feels like this show is starting to happen," Nevins says. Even Macy admits he’s a fan, albeit a jealous one: "Cheadle is just great, but he should pay them to do that role," he says.

Indeed, Cheadle is enjoying the freedom of starring on a Showtime series. "There’s definitely a style of writing that appears on cable that definitely doesn’t happen anywhere else … definitely not on network television and unfortunately, not any more really in the movies, a lot of times," Cheadle says. According to the critically beloved actor, his series steps outside the boundaries of most other cable and pay-cable series. "I don’t know a lot of shows that deal with cross-gender kids and deal with parents and how to talk about that, and I don’t see a lot of [Marty’s son] Roscoe and not a lot of black leads in anything, so I think we were just able to stretch out in ways that are a little different," Cheadle says.

Season 2 is also going to allow the characters themselves to stretch, now that the ordeal of explaining the giant world of management consulting has been dealt with in Season 1. "We’re getting to know everyone a little better," he says. "We’re getting deeper and more nuanced … bringing in elements of race. [And] one of our characters deals directly with the Occupy [Wall Street] issue." Of course, social politics add dimension, but fans of the show are likely waiting in fitful anticipation to see what happens between Marty and Jeannie (Kristen Bell) after last season's finale, during which she broke up with her fiance and the narrative hinted that it had something to do with her hooking up with Marty.

Cheadle says Season 2 will have some serious work to do in sussing out what it all means for their relationship after their implied moment: "Well, we’re definitely trying to figure out what happened between Marty and Jeannie. Is this the start of something?" After all, that's a question that lingered throughout the show's first season. The duo has spent 12 episodes flipping back and forth between potential romance and potential mutual destruction. "I think they clearly had this love, this strange dynamic between them of partners, and friends, and adversaries," Cheadle says. Of course, the actor won't tell us exactly where Marty and Jeannie will find themselves once they broach the love subject, or whether or not that hint in the season finale was a giant tease. We’re not that lucky.

Last, but not least, comes Duchovny’s seasoned Showtime vet Hank Moody, the champion fornicator of Los Angeles. Over the five years we’ve known Hank, we’ve followed him through his life as a writer in Los Angeles: He wrote a book, taught some college classes, stood trial for statutory rape, wrote a movie for Rza of the Wu Tang Clan, and now, in Season 6, he will take a stab at writing a musical. Clearly, nothing is off limits for Hank. But, of course, despite Hank's many talents, his main draw will be the series' original peg: his apparent sex addiction. Of course, as he embarks on year six of Moody’s chronicles, Duchovny wants to make it known that Hank is more than a rapscallion. "I tend not to think of [Hank] with one flaw, but as flawed. And by flawed, I mean human," he says.

Despite his seemingly unwieldy life, Hank is always brought back to earth by some circumstance or consequence for his actions. It’s a cycle that works for him... and for Duchovny, who’s not looking to morph Hank into something he’s not to keep the show 'fresh.' "I think it’s a temptation over a long-running series to try to reinvent the character, when in fact the character is the essence of the show," Duchovny says. "If you change the character and reinvent it, you’re actually making a different show. As fun as it may be for the actor, it’s kind of a dissolution of the bond you’ve made with your audience," he adds. That’s why, time and again, Hank goes through his own form of 'reinvention,' according to Duchovny. "The touchstone for Hank instead of reinvention is to come back to the original relationship [with Karen and Becca]… It’s a rediscovery of what’s most important to the characters."

Heading into Season 6, that’s exactly where we’ll find Hank, who’s just survived his crazy girlfriend’s attempted double suicide. "This year picks up with him getting physically better in the first episode," Duchovny says. If we know anything about Hank, it’s that he seems to be able to survive anything. And his reward, this year, is a little time with guest star Marilyn Manson, who Duchovny says got on the show by emailing with the creator Tom Kapinos. "[Manson’s] a fan of Hank’s and Hank’s a fan of Manson," he says of the rocker’s two-episode stint in which he plays himself.
And while Duchovny’s excited about the guest star, he’s mostly excited to be back. "If we weren’t brought back, then that would have been the end of the show — Hank would have been killed by his crazy lover," he says. Luckily for Duchovny, and for his fans, Hank Moody doesn’t go down that easily.

So Sundays are loaded up with plenty of laughs and drama in winter, and the success of shows like Shameless, House of Lies, and Californication will only lead to more off-the-wall content on the network, like the upcoming Showtime series Ray Donovan, about a professional "fixer" for wealthy families, and Masters of Sex, about the pioneers of the science of human sexuality, airing sometime in 2013. "I feel an enormous sense of freedom and opportunity right now [because] the best people in the business want to be making shows on television," Nevins says. "We’re reaping the benefits." Lucky for audiences, we all share in that bounty, too.

More Than A Skin Spectacle

In some circles, misconceptions run rampant when it comes to the popular Showtime television series Californication. Before even watching the gripping drama some call it a show about a sex addict or they say it exists as a ploy to use skin to increase viewership. True, Californication should be viewed by mature audiences, but like they always say - and here it's true - the artistic program shouldn't be judged by its cover, notes Tri-City Weekly's Myles Cochrane.

Starring David Duchovny as Hank Moody, "Californication is about a writer on the skids - with a substance-abuse problem for sure - who pines for a relationship that he ruined and is trying to relocate that love and his writing gifts as he drowns himself in booze and various sexual encounters," said Evan Handler, the actor who plays Moody's best pal and agent Charlie Runkle. After hearing the IMDB description of the show, Handler couldn't help but be disappointed about the picture the website's bland synopsis paints. And with great reason. Sure, fans of the show love it for being sexy, edgy and provocative, but it also portrays an engagingly vivid view of the entertainment industry. The show is philosophical, it examines relationships with friends and family in a new light and it delivers an often comical as well as brutally honest look at alternative lifestyles. "It has a tone that's very unique," Handler continued. "It manages to be very highbrow and lowbrow simultaneously. You have these guys who are behaving in an infantile fashion for their ages and yet the banter is quite clever and sprinkled with literary references."


While season five's finale hinted at the possibility of Moody being poisoned to death by a jealous ex-girlfriend, a trailer for the new season reveals the main man very much alive, as well as a plethora of great guest stars. In previous years the show has featured guests like Rob Lowe, RZA of film and Wu Tang Clan fame, Rick Springfield and Zakk Wylde. This year's guests include Australian-British actor-musician Tim Minchin, 'Taken' actress Maggie Grace, Steve Jones of the seminal punk group Sex Pistols and the ever-so-brilliant shock-rocker Marilyn Manson. "In season six, Charlie descends with Hank into the world of rock 'n' roll," Handler said. "He gets coerced to adapt one of his books and screenplays into a Broadway musical with a fictional character named Atticus Fetch (played by Minchin) - he's a Bowie-esque rock legend. Minchin is well known in Australia and England and less known here. I think that's bound to change."

Grace plays a professional muse - "I didn't know there was such a thing," Handler continued. "A woman who's made it her business to inspire rock legends and she sets her sights on Hank Moody as an underachiever worthy of her charms and gifts." Jones plays a "burly and surly" bouncer and Manson plays himself in season six. Manson's role also includes a staged performance at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, according to Handler. Lowe will also reprise his role in season six.

While the premiere of season five of the show saw a jump in time of almost three years, season six begins about a week later. "Hank has recovered from his poisoning (in the episode airing Sunday)," Handler said. "The woman who did that to him does not recover as much as Hank does. So he's plagued by guilt over this, which sort of fuels his descent over the season."

Handler, who first met Duchovny during a conference room test-read for the show, said that he and the former The X-Files star kicked their relationship off by reading scenes for series creator Tom Kapinos that were half scripted and half ad-libbed. "There's this great love affair between Charlie Runkle and Hank Moody that's outlasted any of their heterosexual relationships," Handler said. "It's a great buddy story, a great up-and-down, round-and-around type of thing."

Initially intended to be a screenplay, Showtime asked that it be reformatted into a series. Californication in its early stages was supposed to portray Runkle as a closeted homosexual - something that was changed before the pilot was filmed. Ironically in season six, Handler said Runkle pretends to be gay in order to sign an openly gay, major movie star client who wants an agent.

Originally from New York but currently living in Southern California on the coast where Californication is shot, Handler attended The Juilliard School in the late 1970s and early 1980s and was a member of the Drama Division's Group 12 with Kevin Spacey, Ving Rhames, Kelly McGillis and Elizabeth McGovern. In addition to being known for his role in the HBO series Sex and the City, Handler has some big screen credits as well - he was in 1981's 'Taps' starring Tom Cruise and Sean Penn as well as 1996's 'Ransom' starring Mel Gibson.

In the late 1980s, Handler was diagnosed with a seemingly incurable case of leukemia when he was 24 years old. He was cured. To tell his story, he wrote the 1996 book 'Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors' and another in 2008 called 'It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive.' "(The newer volume) tells the story of the 20 years after the illness and the extremely lengthy process of finding and experiencing gratitude (for) the life that I knew I was lucky to be living," Handler said.

Showing Faith In Grace

Last month, Showtime revealed that it was casting a 'major female role' for the sixth season of Californication with an eye towards creating a spinoff for the series. Writer-executive producer Tom Kapinos is said to have created a new professional groupie character, named Faith, who will feature prominently and possibly form the basis for a subsequent stand-alone show. She’s a beautiful American in her mid-to-late 20s, and described as "what happens when an innocent young Catholic school girl is exposed to the evils of rock and roll and falls heads over heels in love with the music and the men who make it." Faith has been on the road with various bands for years and is considered a muse by some elite artists. Though she has a fondness for sex, drugs and rock and role, she remains quite religious. Think a modern-day Penny Lane in Almost Famous on a spiritual quest to reconcile her extreme behavior with her conservative background.

Injecting new characters into an existing show is one of the preferred methods lately to attempt a spinoff, such as NCIS and Bones introducing characters for NCIS: LA and The Finder, respectively. Entertainment Weekly suggests the Californication plan is more unique since Faith is expected to play a significant role next season rather than just appearing in a one-off 'backdoor pilot'. At this early stage, the spinoff is by no means assured. First the producers will have to cast the right actress, then the role must connect with viewers.


The first part of that equation has now been addressed, with Maggie Grace signing on for an extended run. Grace is perhaps best known for her role as Shannon Rutherford on the first two seasons of Lost, in addition to her appearances in Taken, Knight and Day, Lockout, The Fog, Suburban Girl and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 & Part 2. Grace will also appear in the upcoming Fox series, The Following opposite Kevin Bacon. As Faith, she will befriend David Duchovny's Hank Moody early in the sixth season and if you've ever watched the show then you know that it is a very safe assumption that they will wind up as lovers at some point. Grace's stint on Californication is slated to run for nine episodes and the fate of the potential spinoff hinges upon how eagerly the audience embraces her.

You would imagine that the male half of the show's audience will be sold immediately upon the character's planned introductory scene; namely, a "dream sequence in which Faith is being 'eaten out' by Jesus. Slowly- naked save for a little cross of gold around her neck- she rejoins the land of the living, an 'angel beneath the sheets'. The detailed character description then describes Faith, still naked, as having a pretty long conversation with a nameless rock star, before she "gets him to cum, he writes a song and then she gets out of bed. Naked and beautiful. Walking inspiration." The musician watches her, hypnotized by Faith's 'intoxicating combination of sunshine and sin'. Unsurprisingly, given the character and the show, the role requires both tasteful nudity and simulated sex.

It should be noted again, in the interest of balance, that introducing a recurring character on a show with the intention to possibly spin them off into a new series is not as definitive as a traditional planted spinoff. For instance, the producers of Fox’s House explored the idea of a spinoff starring Michael Weston’s recurring PI character on the medical drama but ultimately opted against it.

Californication S05E04

"Jesus fucking christ. I think you just added seven years to my life..."

Justified star Natalie Zea returned to Californication with a very spirited performance in “Waiting for a Miracle.” Earlier this season, Hank woke up with Kali giving him a blowjob. However, it was only a dream. In this week's episode, he woke up with a real message from his ex-girlfriend Carrie; the girl with the bottomless libido who just wants to get "drunk on cock". After setting fire to his apartment in New York, she was bringing her foul mouth and nutty persona over to the west coast. Specifically, Carrie said that she had a “surprise” for Hank. Shortly after the doorbell rang. Hank went to get it and found an envelope with panties in it. Then, Carrie jumped out from the bushes to surprise him. After her explosive breakup with Hank in the Season 5 premiere, she was in much higher spirits and elated to see her ex.

Carrie's in town for a potential job opportunity (a blond, hapless romantic with a career in print journalism—is that you, Carrie Bradshaw?), but she's really there because she's a sucker for love and thinks maybe, just maybe, Hank has matured enough to give her psycho ass a fair shot this time. But as we all know, Hank only has room in his heart for one woman, and it's not Carrie. "Are we really going to stand here wasting our time with chitchat when we could be fucking each other's brains out?" she asked before the two got down to business. While Carrie was on top, finishing up an orgasm, Hank was lying in bed apathetically. She was basically having sex with herself and Hank’s unthinking erection. Still, she loved it. “It just fits so nicely inside there,” Carrie said before rolling off of Hank and suggested that she would make a plaster cast of his penis, since it was a perfect fit, and then create a dildo from that cast. Hank wasn’t shocked by the comment at all and followed it up with the suggestion that she should make a second one so that he could give it to Charlie. Nice.


All of which only serves to set up Karen’s closing monologue in which she expresses genuine concern for Hank’s pattern of impulsive flings and warns him against holding a torch for their love, as a metaphorical gauntlet for Californication itself. If we, the audience, are waiting for Mr. Moody to lick his wounds, grow up, and move on, or, alternately, woo his ex-wife back into a passionate but destructive tango, we may as well hold vigil for the Virgin Mary.

The nudity clause, once required only in movies, is suddenly becoming a standard part of TV work, reports Sean Daly in today's New York Post. The pressure on young actresses to sign can be tremendous, he writes, and it’s not just on cable anymore...

Behind every boob shot and flash of bare buttocks is a hard working entertainment lawyer because they are usually the one to negotiate Hollywood’s most awkward legal agreement: the nudity clause. "The nudity rider spells out exactly what an actor agrees to do in a role: partial nudity, full frontal nudity — even simulated sex," LA attorney Brian J. Murphy says. The document — usually about one page — can be extremely detailed. It typically includes which body parts can be shown, from which angle and for how long. The nudity clause — once a rarity on TV — is becoming, if not standard, an everyday part of contract negotiations. What is more, it’s starting to show.


Kristen Bell, for example, who came to fame 10 years ago as a crime-solving high school student on Veronica Mars, agreed to work in a bra and panties — but not the 'Full Monty' — in the new sex-filled Showtime drama House of Lies. She’s now 31. Shows like NBC’s Playboy Club negotiated detailed nudity riders with key actors to cover scenes filmed for DVD or overseas use. "You have to be careful not to put yourself in a position where you might be taken advantage of," says 19 year-old Vanessa Marano of ABC Family’s Switched at Birth. "Especially if you are not a series regular and you are just a woman going in for a guest spot on cable, they will expect you to take it off. I did Dexter, and there were people naked everywhere on that. I was safe because I was underage, but if I were older, my clothes would have probably had to come off."

Bare breasts and simulated sex have been essential ingredients on pay cable shows like The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Californication for years. Now the four broadcast networks may soon be able to show a lot more skin in prime time, depending on whether the US Supreme Court decides the FCC can no longer regulate against “indecency” — a vague term that can cover anything from a fleeting F-bomb to a deliberate flash of a backside.”

The networks — which have been consistently losing ground to cable, which is unregulated, in the ratings ­— have been complaining for years about the two-standard system. No matter. The ruling has pushed the issue of pressure on actors to strip down to get the part to the front burner. Shonda Rhimes — creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice — insists nobody is forced to disrobe on her steamy ABC shows. “We will write in a love scene, and if somebody says ‘I want to do this love scene while wearing a turtleneck and snow pants,’ we will say ‘fine,’ ” she tells The Post. “If somebody wants to do it completely naked, that is great, too.”

John Wells, producer of the sexually charged Showtime series Shameless, is less flexible. “We are very clear [upfront] that nudity will be required,” he says. “We don’t hire actors who tell us they are not comfortable doing it.” Yet Wells may not be able to fire any of his stars for refusing to strip down. “The performer has the right to refuse to do [nudity] once they have agreed to do it,” says Screen Actors Guild rep Elizabeth Moseley. “Basically, it is not binding. If the performer changes their mind, the producer (only) has the right to use a body double.”

Playing the future Queen of England really does pay off. British actress Camilla Luddington, (in)famous for portraying Kate Middleton in the tepid Lifetime telefilm William & Kate, has just debuted in a meaty role on Showtime’s racy series Californication. The 28-year-old English rose takes on the role of a fired nanny who is then hired by Charlie (Evan Handler) and Marcy (Pamela Adlon) in an eight-episode arc. She seems innocent at first but turns out to be a manipulative little schemer.

Unfortunately for Luddington, the nature of the show means marrying into the actual royal family is most certainly going to be off the agenda now. "I wouldn't be able to handle that — or get naked on Californication," she told Esquire, "that would probably not be allowed." We're talking pretty rude then? "I have to get topless and you definitely see my butt in a lot of stuff," admits Luddington. "I mean, it's a sexy show — there's obviously sex scenes and there's nudity. I don't think Kate Middleton would get away with that. They have this thing: a privacy patch. It's slightly horrifying. It's basically like a panty liner that's skin-colored and it sticks to you — which is definitely, by the way, not fun to take off. But it protects the areas that need to be protected; they frame the cameras so you can't see it. But you're walking around and that's the only thing you have on. You're almost like, should I even bother wearing this?"


It would certainly seem to take you out of the moment. "You have to feel sexy — even if you feel vulnerable in front of the camera," she continues. "Because the reality is when you're in an intimate moment with someone and you're having sex or you're kissing or making out, for me personally, I'm not thinking, Oh my gosh, am I skinny enough? You have to get lost in the moment. I definitely have curves. I don't intend on losing them. It's not like I have the most perfect body in the world. I'm a normal girl. I have my hang-ups, but I sort of had to throw caution to the wind and be like, OK, I'm just going to show you what I've got."

Luddington admits she's had "a couple of naughty beach moments when it's dark and you're definitely not supposed to be there, which makes it a little more fun; you feel the breeze..." but it was the first time she had been naked on screen. "It was the first time I'd ever done nudity," says the Ascot, Berkshire-born actress. "It's written into the contract that I signed that I'm okay to do it. I thought, 'Maybe I'll be the one character, like a nun, who doesn't sleep with anyone all season.' Of course, that doesn't happen. I was so naive. But it turned out I was surprisingly comfortable with it. At the end of the day, you just kind of have to let go of all your inhibitions and all your hang-ups and be free with it and have fun with it," she says. Besides, "Everyone on the set has seen it a thousand times."

Speaking to the National Ledger, Luddington also credits Duchovny, who told her, "Anything you're uncomfortable with, call me or the director and we'll work around it.' A camera angle, a shot, anything whatever." The actress is equally adept at British and American accents but says she chose to go into Californication meetings carrying on in the English way, "to stand out a little bit. The lines sounded almost more ridiculous that way, talking about sexually explicit things with a proper British accent." Of course, the Californication team was well-aware of her Kate Middleton performance, too. She's often been called "Your Highness" around the set. "There's even a part at one point where I do a little curtsey and say, 'Thank you, my lord.' I think they wrote it in as a playful little wink."

Californication stars Duchovny as has-been novelist Hank Moody, who is struggling to revitalize his professional career while maintaining a good relationship with his ex-wife and teenage daughter. Showtime renewed the veteran dark comedy for a fifth season in January. As well as Luddington, Meagan Good will be stopping by for eight episodes this time around, and hip-hop musician RZA will also be returning.

Is The Fairytale Over?

Once upon a time, in a lounge room far, far away, people would have fainted at the sight of nudity on television. But as our culture progresses away from T.V.’s modest conventions, are we becoming more and more accustomed to adopting jaw-dropping sex scenes as our source of entertainment rather than finding it in a well scripted plot? asks Tea Tripping...

These days it seems most shows are trying to scream out ‘screw all those right wing, conservative knobs, let’s be edgy and show as much sex as possible!’ And if a show isn’t screaming that out (or at least showing one pair of breasts per episode) it’s considered a little mundane, a little underwhelming and a little cultureless; that, or it might actually have to rely on it’s script, what has the world come to!


Though most audiences are looking for something quirky and a little out of the ordinary in their shows, do we really see these programs with an abundance of boobs, sex and violence as doing something on edge? Sure controversy has always been a good tool for the publicity of a show; make it as grotesque and erotic as discerningly possible and people will watch, and we already know sex sells; but does this mode of address actually encapsulate ‘the fan’ when so many cultural spheres would find it tasteless?

My beef is that much of the time I find that shows with a lot of these explicit themes are compensating for lacking in the script and narrative department. The new Underbelly Razor is a perfect example of a show using this kind of ‘re-directing attention’ tool. It’s easy to see through the snappy one-liners, flamboyant costumes and dangerous nudity that attempt to bring Underbelly together, and while the basis for a good story might be there, the charm and wit that come with true creativity is not.

Deadwood, on the other hand, manages to incorporate violent and sexual themes without that same desperate reliance. It is T.V. shows that depend on such themes in place of a good script that really annoy me, not the idea of them altogether.

In saying that, however, there are probably more brilliantly written shows out there now than ever before. It is the blossoming of transmedia that has really made it necessary for some shows in the T.V. biz to use outrageous, risky and unashamed styles, as with such a vast array of mediums and platforms that television can now be received on, maintaining and capturing an audience is harder than ever.

Obviously there are many cultures that would still never allow shows such as True Blood and Californication (two American dramas both very adept at making soft core porn for television) to be aired, so how do these shows reflect the tastes of their audiences? Do the people who watch shows like Underbelly and Spartacus (that show in which you can see ten pairs of breasts and one hundred men brutally slaughtered in the first two minutes) watch it purely for the naked people and disturbing violence, or do they honestly enjoy the program’s ‘qualities’?

The most brilliant of scenes are the ones filmed with suggestion rather than crassness. T.V. shows should be admired for their ability to leave their audiences dangling, not by making the plot and characters blatantly obvious.

Whatever happened to leaving some things to the imagination? While nudity and sexual references can be a tool adding to the culture of some shows, like it does with Deadwood, using those themes just for the sake of getting attention or making up for drab content is lazy and reeks of try hard rebellion.

Zoe Kravitz goes her own way

Californication S04

Carla Gugino has signed on to be a featured guest star on the upcoming fourth season of Showtime's "Californication." Showtime has announced that Gugino- last seen in primetime as Vincent Chase's agent-turned-girlfriend on "Entourage"- will appear in 10 of the season's 12 episosdes playing a defense attorney. No. Wait. Showtime says Gugino will play "a sexy defense attorney," just in case you worried that the actress might be cast against type as a dowdy defense attorney.

To be more specific, the fourth season finds David Duchovny's Hank dealing with the blowback from his long-past dalliance with the then-underage Mia (Madeline Zima). His legal problems force him to seek out a high-powered lawyer to keep him out of prison. No. Wait. Showtime specifies that Gugino will play a "hot, high-powered lawyer." Again, that's just in case you thought she might go homely this time around.

In any case, Hank will have a hard time keeping his hands off of Gugino's character, which only seems fair given that Hank has a hard time keeping his hands off of everybody. Gugino's TV credits include "Karen Sisco," "Threshold," "Spin City" and "Entourage." On the big screen, she starred in the "Spy Kids" films and in "Watchmen."

Also joining the cast for eight episodes is "Cashmere Mafia" star Addison Timlin, who will play an actress starring in the film within the show.
