HBO's Penis Envy

In "Impossible to Tell," former poet laureate Robert Pinsky refers to "the rude, full-scale joke, impossible to tell in writing." Hung, a new HBO dramedy, is that kind of rude, full-scale joke, thinks Joshua Alston. It stars Thomas Jane as Ray Drecker, a high-school basketball coach with the luck of Job: his wife leaves him for a smug dermatologist. (Anne Heche plays said wife as such a brittle, overbearing person that it seems Ray caught a break, but in voice-over, he tells us this is a bad thing.) The lakefront home he grew up in burns down, and as he has no insurance, he ends up living in a tent on the lawn. Penniless and powerless, he colludes with Tanya (the invaluable Jane Adams), a woman he meets in a class on how to get rich by marketing yourself, to market the only thing he has left: his gigantic penis. Don't feel bad if you didn't anticipate this based on the title. It could have been about an art gallery.

Hung is born of the simplest kind of substitution humor, in which a familiar situation has an unfamiliar variable introduced to it. A woman who finds herself in dire straits, forced to sell her body, isn't terribly funny. Neither are gay hustlers, who are usually tragic characters too. Swap in a rakish, middle-aged straight man and comic high jinks ensue. After all, a straight hustler is doing what we, societally, would expect a straight man to be doing anyway.

He's having indiscriminate sex with women, and he's using money goggles instead of beer goggles to get the job done. And truthfully, men do seem preoccupied with the notion of being paid for sex, if Google is any indication. A search for how to become a male porn star yields nearly 1.5 million hits. Meanwhile, there are a paltry 200,000 hits for how to become a beer taster, a job just as enviable but much more paunch-friendly.

This sex-starved stereotype of straight men is reinforced in the world of Hung in which prostitution truly is a victimless crime. The dramatic tension doesn't come from Ray's inner turmoil about what he's doing. Instead, the show uses prostitution to explore the same theme other racy cable series explore with murder (Dexter) and drugs (Breaking Bad, Weeds)—the care and feeding of a double life. When Showtime debuted its series Secret Diary of a Call Girl, some critics complained that Hannah (Billie Piper), driven to her profession by choice rather than circumstance, was too glossy and charmed for a prostitute. Ray's situation is the opposite—he's stumbling clumsily into the world's oldest profession—which is what makes Hung work, when it does work.

Based on the first four episodes, the rude, full-scale joke on display in Hung doesn't seem much easier to execute onscreen than it does in writing. For one, our collective aversion to male frontal nudity means the show has to be coy about Ray's "gift." Regardless of our actual interest in it, Ray's penis becomes like Charlie, the disembodied voice of Charlie's Angels: the longer it's concealed, the more we'll wonder what the fuss is all about. Hung boasts an intriguing premise for a series, but so far it's burnt around the edges and raw in the center, neither as funny nor as serious as it should be. Who knows, though? It could be a grower.

Sexism- the Final Frontier

"Spock, the women on your planet are logical. That's the only planet in this galaxy can make that claim." -- Captain James T. Kirk

Despite the progressiveness of the Star Trek franchise, with a multi-racial cast, with its optimistic view of the future of humankind, one of the gripes about the Classic series was the way it portrayed women, writes Nik Leshi in City of Kik. There definitely was some 1960s sexism on display, from the mini-skirted outfits to Captain Kirk's lothario persona who unabashedly chased those mini-skirts in virtually every episode.

Kirk's womanizing personality was actually a humanizing trait for the character and it led to some great stories, including his out-of-wedlock son in the movies The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock. And the revealing outfits can be explained by changing fashions every generation. Who is to say that the future won't see women embracing clothes that show off their feminine charms without it being seen as a subjugation to the whims of man?

The part that does hold some merit in the criticism is the way female characters were portrayed -- communications officers, nurses, assistants, concubines. No security personnel were women. All the major roles, from science officer, to ship's doctor, to navigator, to engineer were portrayed by men. It took decades for the franchise to finally show its first woman starship captain in the otherwise forgettable series Star Trek Voyager (and that series had to include Seven of Nine, a Borg sexpot; not that I'm complaining.)

Let me give creator Gene Roddenberry credit: he wanted to show women as authority figures and not as sexist cliches. In the first Trek pilot, he cast his wife Majel Barrett as "Number One," Captain Christopher Pike's right-hand officer and second-in-command of the U.S.S. Enterprise, but one of the reasons the network rejected the show at the time was the now-laughable-and-insulting critique that television audiences weren't ready to accept a woman in such a position of power. (Network honchos also criticized the "guy with the ears" but luckily Roddenberry stuck to his guns and kept Leonard Nimoy in the role of the half-human half-Vulcan Mr. Spock.)

Despite having to satisfy the biases of network executives, Star Trek still provided some great moments for women. Many people mention Lt. Uhura played by Nichelle Nichols as an inspiration. Other strong female roles appeared in the 1960s series, including Joan Collins as Edith Keeler in "City on the Edge of Forever," Mariette Hartley as Zarabeth in "All Our Yesterdays," and Diana Muldaur as Dr. Miranda Jones in "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" (she also starred as a different but equally compelling character in the episode "Return to Tomorrow" and played the ship's doctor Pulaski for one season of Star Trek: The Next Generation.)

Even the smaller female roles left a great mark on the series. I was disappointed that two of my favorites didn't appear in the new Star Trek movie: Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand (although Dr. McCoy does call out for Nurse Chapel in the film.)

Yeoman Rand was a key character at the beginning of the first season of the original Trek. Unfortunately, they wrote her out of the series, probably since they were building up her romantic relationship with Kirk and they didn't want to tie the character down to a single love interest.

Nurse Chapel (also played by Majel Barrett, who also voiced the ship's computer) had some strong moments in the first series, particularly in the episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of" in which she finds her lost fiance Dr. Roger Korby on a planet building androids. The most intriguing part of the character was her subtle yet profound attraction for Mr. Spock which revealed itself in a number of episodes. I was hoping this might be explored in the new Trek film (instead of another path the filmmakers chose to take), but maybe the character will be fully introduced in a future sequel and that's a storyline for another day.

The famous opening narration of Star Trek used to say "space, the final frontier...where no man has gone before," and was eventually revised to "where no one has gone before." Despite all this, Star Trek was and is a great example of how science fiction can allow us to look at things like politics, religion, social issues, and even gender roles, and not only imagine "what if" but also aim a mirror at our current selves.

Anna Brewster says it was "fine" filming her first nude sex scene in The Tudors because the cast and crew had far more important things on their minds than her naked body. The Grand Entrance

Anna Hutchison's grand entrance onto Australian television involved stripping naked for more than 2.5 million people in her raunchy role in the Underbelly prequel. While some viewers and family groups condemned her steamy sex scenes with Matthew Newton and frequent exposure of her breasts as soft porn, others drooled. Acknowledging the attention and backlash as "controversy the producers will be loving", the New Zealand actress said she dared to bare and would do it again. "A lot of women's roles you are up for call for nudity and it is just up to . . . whether you think the role needs it, and this one did," Hutchison, 23, said.

"Sometimes in maybe a comedy or something like that you might think, 'Yes, I've got funny-looking boobs so that would work'. It didn't worry me, but it's not the only thing I am capable of. I knew at the beginning there was nudity involved. I liked the real passion (Allison Dine) had. You want something that will challenge you and this has. I'm lucky the roles I've had since I was 16 have been totally different to how I am."

Hutchison's big Underbelly break came after years of chipping away at her showbiz career. Since landing a regular role in New Zealand soap Shortland Street in 2001, she has been juggling completing a business degree with featuring in local productions. After exposing so much flesh, it's probably no surprise a conservative role is next on Hutchison's agenda. "Probably a librarian or a nun," she laughed.

Shameless S07E05

Joanna Higson, 26, plays nurse Maxine Donnelly. Her boyfriend Nicky Evans plays Shane Maguire. Has anything in the script freaked you out?
In this series I have a sex scene involving a trapeze. I regret letting it slip that I used to be a gymnast.

How are the sex scenes?
It makes me nervous, but us girls always keep some clothes on and we know it’s just work, not real life.

You look a lot younger than you are, has that helped?
For work it does, but the other day I got asked my age when I bought a lottery ticket.

This series, Maxine seduces Carl (Elliott Tittensor) – are you that forward in real life?
No. I didn’t have a boyfriend for years. I was a slow starter cos I was too busy at school studying and doing gymnastics. I didn’t kiss a boy until I was 18.

Does playing Maxine make you feel sexier?
I do things I’d never try in real life. But I wear four pairs of pants for anything naughty. Nicky knows that I’m a square and all my friends say I’m a geek.

What’s it like watching Nicky shag Sally?
I’m not stupid enough to think, ‘Get your hands off my boyfriend!’ It’s acting. Nicky watches me doing it too, you just have to trust and respect each other and we know it’s strictly professional.

How realistic is the Chatsworth Estate?
I grew up on an estate and my mum still lives on one. We weren’t privileged, but we weren’t poverty-stricken and it wasn’t all sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll.

Underbelly As Soft Porn

Bare breasts and raunchy sex scenes have sparked fierce debate following the second outing of the Underbelly prequel on Monday. While the premiere telemovie, Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities, kept nudity and foul language to a minimum, viewers and family groups expressed their concern over intimate scenes between heroin kingpin Terry Clark (played by Matthew Newton) and his drug-running mistress Allison (Anna Hutchison) saying they edged on soft porn.

The prolonged nudity of Hutchison, a lead character in the one hour episode, raised concerns about the M rated gangland crime drama screening at 8.30pm. Under the Commercial Television Code of Conduct, Channel 9 is within their rights to telecast the program at 8.30pm, the first available time slot to show M rated material, as it's considered the beginning of adult viewing in prime time on weekdays. TV networks self-regulate their show's classifications and time slots, which includes enforcing general (G) ratings between 4pm and 7pm and parental guidance (PG) zones between 7pm and 8.30pm on weekdays.

Mature audience (MA) classifications come into play seven days a week between 9pm and 5am and adult violence (AV) ratings are recommended from 9.30pm to 5am. Pay television follows almost identical guidelines. "The 8.30pm time slot isn't a family friendly zone, it's always been the adults time slot,'' Nine's chief classification officer Richard Lyle says.

However, the excessive nudity in Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities, which attracted a national average audience of 2.46 million on Monday evening, was condemned by Australian Family Association representative Joe Lopez yesterday. Lopez called on the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to review the self-regulation codes because the 8.30pm time slot is still open to teenagers.

"The laws governing censorship need to be reviewed because teenagers are still up at this time,'' Lopez says. "There's no excuse at anytime to show excessive pornography or violence like they do in Underbelly. They are trying to put a dramatic representation of how crime was in relation to the illicit drug trade in that time by glamorising it with sex. If you are trying to show that illicit drugs are a driver for criminality, why lump the whole thing with pornography? This isn't soft porn, it's pornography.''

With one season of Underbelly, which showcased Melbourne's underworld blood-drenched shootings, breasts galore and potty mouths, down, Lyle says the network received just three complaints following Monday's episode. "Those people who says it's soft porn have clearly never actually watched soft porn because you see actual intercourse,'' says Lyle, who also said offensive swear words including 'cunt' would usually only be shown under an MA classification.

Eastbound & Down S01E01

Fuck you, you piece of shit...

Kenny Powers is a major-league asshole—literally. As the bravura montage that opens the pilot episode of Eastbound and Down (HBO) reveals, he’s a redneck pitcher (think John Rocker with Randy Johnson’s ’do) who hits it big in the bigs and lets it go straight to his head. Inflammatory statements, team hopping, drugs, ’roids, the works, until he finds himself dragging his washed-up ass and his beloved leopard-print jet ski back to his hometown of Shelby, N.C., to move in with his working-stiff brother and take a job as a middle-school phys ed teacher. It’s a premise both jejune (fish-out-of-water moves in with unsuspecting nuclear family, one of the hoariest sitcom set-ups ever) and plain old bizarre (leopard-print jet ski?).

See, Kenny is having a hard time being humbled. He can’t talk to women without either hitting on them or insulting them (or kinda both), and he can’t help but belittle the ordinary life that his brother Dustin (Deadwood’s John Hawkes) troubles to welcome him into. He bumps into sweet, pneumatic high-school girlfriend April (Katy Mixon) and prepares to mack only to discover that she’s engaged to his new boss, nebbish-y Principal Cutler (a spot-on Andrew Daly). The closest thing he can muster for a star entourage is burnout bartender/drug dealer Clegg (Best) and maladjusted band teacher Stevie (Steve Little), and the nearest substitute for the once-unending flow of hot ladies is town skank Tracy, played by the game Sylvia Jefferies.

Indeed, Jefferies, who once installed a pole in her home to train as an exotic dancer for an episode of TV's "One Tree Hill, appears to have the most fun as a regular on the show, which completed its first season of shooting in Wilmington last Autumn. This, after a lengthy hiatus between the pilot and episodes 2-6, necessitated by the increasing demands on series star and co-writer Danny McBride. Jefferies plays a vivacious woman with a mind of her own.

"She's probably who I wish I could be if I didn't have the Southern illness of caring about what people think of me," Jefferies says. "She is a person who always does what she thinks she should. But she's also a fun party girl, with not a lot of responsibilities, and she likes her tequila. Although she likes any man in power, she's very independent and the one who's really in charge of everything.

"I'm very independent myself, but I take things much more seriously than Tracy does. Growing up in the South, you just can't get away with her kind of behavior. Like my father once told me, 'Your reputation is your character minus what you're caught doing.'"

Californication S01E08

After he made TV history when his main character had a tryst with a minor in Californication's first episode, you can trust Tom Kapinos, the show's creator, to dream up even more titillating visuals — like David Duchovny's Hank Moody snorting cocaine off Judy Greer's behind. Greer, best known for her roles in romantic comedies opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner, as well as her stint on Arrested Development, joined the show for its eighth episode as a prostitute who is there for Hank Moody in a time of need.

How did they present the part to you?
Greer: David had asked me about a couple of different roles over the episodes they had been shooting, but I was working — I was shooting a movie over the summer. I had just wrapped when they called me and asked, "How about playing a hooker?" And I was like, "Yeah" because I am so not the actress who gets called in to play the hooker. So that's how it was presented. My manager called and said, " Do you want to have David Duchovny snort cocaine off your ass in Californication?" And I said, "As long as it's not my naked ass — yes."

So it's not your naked ass?
Greer: Maybe at some point. I'm not sure, I'll have to see it. I wasn't paying too much attention that day because I was like, "Oh, let it be over.... " As I've been watching the show, I've realized that I got off pretty easy.

Did you guys have fun doing it?
Greer: Oh, yeah. It was such a good time that I was kind of fantasizing that they would call the hooker back, because I could totally do this every week. The people were great and the material is so well written that it's so easy to perform. It's funny but it's simple. Does that make sense? It feels like how people really talk, and not like an insane concept.

Madeline Zima

Do nude scenes make you nervous?
Madeline Zima: I was totally nervous, but once I was actually naked, I was pretty comfortable. For some reason, the taking on and off of the clothes is the shameful aspect of it. Pulling your pants back up after it’s over, that’s the worst part. Standing around naked is natural— it’s nice.

When’s the first time a guy saw you naked?
Madeline Zima: Topless? I guess I was, like, 15.

Did you see him?
Madeline Zima: I saw him topless.

Not a fair trade.
Madeline Zima: No, it’s not. And I’m sure I said something along those lines. But you know how guys are, especially when they’re young.

Zima embraced the more confronting aspects of her role. “I’d never done a nude scene before but I was actually looking forward to that opportunity,” she says. “There’s an honesty to being naked or semi-naked - you can’t be false. Being that exposed and that vulnerable, there will be real moments in the performance. It was actually all the lead-up to filming the scene that proved more stressful. I’d built it up in my head so much that when I was actually there, it was no big deal that I was there in my undies with no shirt on.”
