Leslie represents the final significant player added to the huge second season cast of Game of Thrones. She has landed the key role of the woman that Jon Snow meets during during his adventures beyond the Wall. Ygritte is described as “strong-willed, witty, skilled in battle and survival in the wilderness. An unconventional beauty, skinny but strong with red hair (which the Wildlings consider ‘kissed by fire’).” Interestingly, the tribal character doesn’t actually enter into the second Song of Ice and Fire novel until its closing chapters; a pretty good indication that production of Season 2 is now well advanced and hopefully we’ll see some photos or video soon.
The flame-haired Scottish actress joins an ever expanding cast, to which the HBO drama have already added a mercenary sell sail pirate (Lucian Msamati as Salladhor Saapirate), a lecherous Northerner (Robert Pugh as Craster) and one of his pet daughters/wives (Hannah Murray as Gilly), as well as a faceless assassin (Tom Wlaschiha as Jaqen H’gar), Theon’s fierce sister (Gemma Whelan as Yara/Asha Greyjoy), an heir to the Iron Throne (Stephen Dillane as Stannis Baratheon) and his sorceress (Carice van Houten as Melisandre), the Onion Knight (Liam Cunningham as Davos), a female wannabe knight (Gwendoline Christie as Brienne), a proper princess (Natalie Dormer as Margaery Tyrell) and sinister Lord of the Dreadfort (Michael McElhatton as Roose Bolton).
There is an interesting break-down of what we can expect nudity-wise for the upcoming season as provided by The Master Of Whisperers, courtesy of the excellent UK Nude Scenes blog. I've reproduced the salient points in a hopefully even less spoilery version of the already careful original but the speculation neccessarily reveals which characters survive through to subsequent books so if that bothers you, don't read on....
A couple of notes of caution first. Season one actually didn't have much nakedness from established actresses except for those with an erotica background. Seriously, we should've seen Cat and Cersei naked if they'd been totally faithful to the book. Most of the nudity came from a newcomer (Emilia Clarke as Dany) and a burlesque performer breaking into acting (Esmé Bianco as Ros). There was also an ex-porn-star-turned-actress (Sibil Kekilli as Shae) and a porn star (Sahara Knite as the other prostitute in the infamous sexposition scene with Ros and Littlefinger). Which left Roxanne Mckee (as Doreah) as the only other actress to get her kit off.
Also they were pretty faithful to the book for A Game of Thrones but there were a few changes and missing characters. A Clash of Kings is the second book (I'll be using the initials ACOK from now), it's longer than A Game of Thrones but they're making the same number of episodes. Some characters aren't in ACOK as much and they'll probably write some more for them. So there'll probably be book stuff cut to fit it all in. The producers have said this will be "the year of the love story" which doesn't fit the book much so there must be stuff added.
Some of the characters we've already met have nude scenes in the book but not many of them will do in the series. Dany doesn't have too much to do in the book but has loads of half-toplessness as most of her stuff in the books is in the city of Qarth where it's the fashion to walk around with a nork out but the rumours are that they're not going to show that. She has some bath scenes which might stay and might not, some of them are with Irri but Amrita Acharia won't do nudity (says Casting Call Pro), so if they use those scenes they might change the books and have Doreah (Roxanne Mckee) in them instead. Osha (Natalia Tena) is naked after swimming in a pool but there's not much point to it so probably won't get to TV. Sansa has a topless scene in ACOK and more nudity in the third book, A Storm of Swords (ASOS). Many of the young characters were made older (Dany is only thirteen at the start of the books) but not Sansa and Sophie Turner won't be eighteen until after they've finished making the two seasons ASOS will take so they'll have to shoot those scenes carefully or use a body double.
Shae (Sibil Kekilli) has more sex scenes in ACOK so she's most likely to be naked again in the series and so is non-book-character Ros, Esmé Bianco was asked back after the producers liked her in the first episode so Ros was used whenever a prostitute (or gratuitous nudity) was needed. She's supposed to be coming back in season two. There's a prossy called Alalaya in ACOK and Ros may be used in her place. I don't think Alalaya ever gets her kit off in the book but if Ros was used instead, she probably would.
Some Brits have been named as playing new (to TV) characters in season two but it's a Dutch woman that we know is the only definite new actress with nudity coz the casting call mentioned it. She's Carice van Houten playing Melisandre. Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) won't have nude scenes although she might in later seasons, same with a character called Ygritte (Rose Leslie) who will appear at the end of the season but has one nude scene (full frontal) in ASOS. A model called Gwendoline Christie is going to play Brienne and if they keep her nude scene from the books, it should be in the first season based on ASOS.
Bad news for Skins fans, Gilly (Hannah Murray) is pregnant for all of ACOK. She's got breastfeeding scenes in ASOS and A Feast for Crows (AFFC) but Hannah's itty bitties won't be convincing milk teats so they'll probably use a prosthetic like they did for Lysa Arryn in season one. She has a sex scene in AFFC but we'll have to wait about five years for that to be on TV. There'll be an even longer wait for Yara's sex scene. Yara was called Asha in the books, Gemma Whelan is the actress but her first sex scene is in the fifth book, A Dance With Dragons (ADWD).
The books have viewpoint characters and some of the main characters are only seen through them, one being Robb Stark who isn't really in ACOK apart from his battles being reported on. Then in ASOS, we find out he's picked up a woman called Jeyne. Oona Chaplin was reported at first as playing Jeyne but it's now coming out that she's playing someone called Lissa instead but she's still a love interest for Robb. Some fans think Lissa is Jeyne with a different name, in which case we'll be seeing what is just reported in ASOS including a likely sex scene. I think she's the most likely established Brit to show skin in season two but I think most of the nudity will come from models and erotica types again. The papers were full of Lisa Nolan walking out on filming after being asked to go topless as "King's Mistress", Theon Greyjoy shags around during the book (look out for Captain's Daughter and Kyra in casting announcements, if they stick to the book) and I think that sort of thing, along with Ros and Shae, are our best bets.
